This limited production single vineyard Chardonnay demonstrates our philosophy of selecting only the very best rows from the very best blocks on the property. Sourced from Block 2 of our Stevens Road vineyard, 3km down the road from the Xanadu winery in the Wallcliffe subregion, this wine offers a unique expression of the outstanding quality wine this special little vineyard is capable of producing. Producing some of our best Chardonnay, the pedigree of the Stevens Road vineyard deserves recognition in its own right and is bottled as this single vineyard wine.

Chardonnay (100%)
Margaret River
The growing season began with a late budburst after a relatively cold Winter with reasonable rainfall. The cool Spring which followed resulted in some uneven flowering and fruit set, and generally lower than average yields. We experienced a significant (and unusual) rain event mid-January which was timely due to the later season, and this was followed by some fine, mild weather to get vintage underway.

Tasting Notes

Pale Straw
The bouquet of this elegant, Chardonnay offers both purity and complexity; White flowers, citrus and stone fruit with underlying oatmeal notes and a dash of sea spray.
The palate is medium bodied displaying pears, white peach, and zesty grapefruit characters. Fine boned and quartz-like in structure, yet still retaining succulence with a lovely lightness of texture. The fruit intensity and wonderful natural acidity focuses the wine perfectly to a moreish, saline finish.

Made entirely from Gingin clone Chardonnay which was whole bunch pressed followed by 100%-barrel fermentation in select French oak (20% new oak). Wild fermentation was encouraged on all of the components, in order to introduce more complexity and personality into the wine. All of the individual batches which make up the blend were lees stirred throughout a nine-month oak maturation period, without any malolactic fermentation. The final blend was put together in November 2019.

Professional Reviews

Pure pristine and electrically charged chardonnay from this cooler but exceptional vintage. A burst of energy greets immediately with a subtle combination of butterscotch, grapefruit and citrus that delivers its kick with poised understatement. But the palate extends relentlessly to a wonderful minerally crisp finish, with that lifted acidity taking you into another zone.
Restrained and elegant with grapefruit, brioche and delicate salinity. Opens up in the glass beautifully to reveal white florals, gun flint and cheese rind characters. The palate is compact and focused – there is a weight of core fruit that embraces the classy oak and leaves one wanting another look. Bright, refreshing acidity – evident of the slightly cooler 2019 vintage, yet there is power and density here. Impressive stuff – it will only get better with time and reward the drinker accordingly.
We may intellectualise wine, but at its heart, it is an emotional pursuit. This 2019 Stevens Road provided a moment of unadulterated joy when I drank it on Christmas Day. The salty acid and taut citrus fruit cut through the conversation and the heat of the day, injecting pleasure and calm. This is svelte, with salty limes. Briney and delicious. Buy both the 2019 Reserve and Stevens Road chardonnays: cellar the Reserve, drink this.
