This limited production single vineyard Chardonnay demonstrates our philosophy of selecting only the very best rows from the very best blocks on the property. Sourced from Block 2 of our Stevens Road vineyard, 3km down the road from the Xanadu winery in the Wallcliffe subregion, this wine offers a unique expression of the outstanding quality wine this special little vineyard is capable of producing. Producing some of our best Chardonnay, the pedigree of the Stevens Road vineyard deserves recognition in its own right and is bottled as this single vineyard wine.

Viticulture

Chardonnay (100%)
2020
Margaret River
Average Winter rainfall followed by a warm/dry Spring set up an early start to the growing season. Fruit set was variable, resulting in lower yields across most varieties. The warm Summer daytime temperatures combined with low yields saw harvest begin very early, at the end of January (one of our earliest ever) and all whites were harvested before the end of February. An incredible display of Marri blossom meant bird pressure was practically non-existent in the first half of vintage, and a short rain event after the white harvest offered some respite setting up the reds perfectly. Warm conditions continued throughout March, with all of the reds being harvested by the first week of April, our earliest ever harvest completion. In summary, 2020 will be remembered as an excellent vintage in Margaret River. The fruit for this Chardonnay is from Block 2 of our Stevens Road Vineyard, which is situated on the Boodjidup Brook about 3km from the winery. Fruit of this mature, low yielding vineyard has consistently produced some of our best Chardonnay each vintage. The pedigree of the vineyard deserves recognition in its own right, so much so, that we release the best barrels as a Single Vineyard wine.

Tasting Notes

Pale Straw
The bouquet of this elegant Chardonnay displays white fleshed stone fruit and poached pear characters with underlying hints of oyster shell and flint adding complexity.
The palate is medium bodied offering white peach, pome fruits, citrus and nougat. Fine boned in structure with a pithy grapefruit backbone the wine retains succulence and has a subtle creamy ‘al dente’ textural mouthfeel derived from lees stirring. The fruit intensity and wonderful natural acidity persist through to a lingering, moreish finish.
A modern, refined style of Chardonnay, displaying classic Margaret River hallmarks. The 2020 Stevens Road is a wine which, while drinking well in its youth will certainly reward with careful cellaring, developing further complexity from bottle maturation.

Made entirely from Gingin clone Chardonnay which was whole bunch pressed followed by 100%-barrel fermentation in select French oak (25% new oak). Wild fermentation was encouraged on all of the components, in order to introduce more complexity and personality into the wine. All of the individual batches which make up the blend were lees stirred throughout a nine-month oak maturation period, without any malolactic fermentation. The final blend was put together in November 2020.

Technical side first. The chardonnay from this small vineyard was handpicked and then whole bunch pressed to French oak barriques, of which 27% were new, for wild fermentation. The barrels were stirred regularly over nine months but consistent with Glenn Goodall's approach the wines did not go through malolactic fermentation. This was one of the coolest and smallest Margaret River vintages. But it was also one of the best in terms of quality. There is tremendous power ad palate intensity here with a chalky salted caramel-like palate lifted with a bright minerally acidity. Has a chalky mouth feel with a dry savoury finish. Outstanding wine.

Very light, bright yellow colour. The bouquet is very reserved and fresh, youthful, creamed nuts and a hint of nougat, a trace of citron, the tightness and reserve echoed on the palate, which is fresh and reserved, with an attractive combination of delicacy and intensity. A trace of richness in the centre. Taut and long, and needing more time to fully emerge. 21 APR 2022

The Gin Gin – aka Mendoza - chardonnay clone is very Margaret River. Very Western Australia, for that matter. It dominates plantings in the west while a range of French clones tend to be favoured over the rest of the country. The Stevens Road chardonnay is very Gin Gin . . . sunny, breezy, beachy. Like lounging on the sands of Gnarabup Beach, sipping on a freshly-squeezed tropical fruit juice, and taking in the scent of the ocean and the coastal scrub. That’s Gin Gin. This is a delightful wine, highlighting what we love about Margaret River chardonnay – its immediacy. It’s obvious, luscious and absolutely delicious. Ripe peach, nectarine and citrus roll off the tongue easily. There is a lovely textural mouthfeel here, slippery and smooth. Oak presence is never too far away, but is far from excessive with a soft vanillin, almond butter overlay. The ripeness of the fruit, its richness, demands, no needs the structure and extra layers of flavour that oak can bring. And it’s smart, well-seasoned oak. That makes a big difference. A wine for drinking now and for later. The best of both worlds.

White peach, ripe grapefruit, almond and sweet spices, some vanilla perfume too. It’s juicy, zesty, all the pink grapefruit and ripe lime, backed with tasteful vanilla spice oak, good crunch and energy, again the almond and zesty citrus, with a long finish that zips along very nicely. Lovely wine.
