XANADU CABERNET CROWNED CHAMPION WINE OF SHOW AT THE NATIONAL WINE SHOW
We’re proud to share that our 2023 Xanadu Cabernet Sauvignon has been been recognised as the Champion Wine of Show at the National Wine Show of Australia, awarded the Prime Minister’s Trophy in Canberra last night. This is the highest possible accolade in the Australian wine show circuit. On its way to the top spot, the wine was also awarded Red Wine of Show and the Cabernet Sauvignon Trophy — our 11th Cabernet Trophy in just 16 years.
This recognition follows an extraordinary run of accolades for this wine and Xanadu more broadly, reinforcing its place among the world’s great Cabernet producers.

A DEFINING YEAR FOR XANADU CABERNET SAUVIGNON
This latest national accolade follows a remarkable year for the wine on both the global and Australian stage. Earlier this year, Xanadu Cabernet Sauvignon was awarded an IWSC Trophy, receiving an exceptional 98‑point rating and ranked #1 red wine in the world from more than 12,000 wines entered globally.

On what this recognition means to him:
Incredibly rewarding, not just for me but for the whole team (past and present). Ever since I came to Margaret River I’ve had an affinity with Cabernet (but I’m not quite sure if I discovered Cabernet or Cabernet found me). Either way, Cabernet is the greatest grape variety on the planet, so this recognition is pretty special.
On what makes Margaret River such a compelling home for Cabernet Sauvignon:
I could go on forever here (and go down a very deep rabbit hole of climate, geography and geology) but the essence of it is:
Margaret River is viticulturally blessed; with ancient soils, reliable winter rainfall, and a wonderful maritime climate where the cooling influence of the ocean allows Cabernet to reach full physiological ripeness without losing its inherent freshness and varietal identity. Add to that an awesome wine community, full of belief and willingness to share knowledge, and it makes a pretty compelling case for Margs to be the home of some of the best Cabernet in the world.
On his philosophy over his 25 years at Xanadu:
My winemaking philosophy has always been to keep it simple in the winery, and spend as much time (at the right times) in the vineyard. I walk a lot of rows during vintage!
It’s also really important to foster and maintain good relationships with our growers, as well as staff and the wider team (tradies, contractors etc.). When everyone is on board and feels a sense of pride in what we’re all doing it goes a long way to achieving a common goal. It is always a team effort, and I have always respected the teams inputs and opinions, especially when tasting/blending. You’re never too old to stop learning!
