The Reserve range continues to be the best of what we are able to produce in a given vintage – single vineyard or otherwise. Fruit was predominantly sourced from two mature, dry grown vineyards; Timber Creek, in the Wilyabrup subregion; and Victory Point in the Treeton subregion of Margaret River and was supplemented with a small amount of Malbec from our Stevens Road vineyard in Wallcliffe. The resulting blend from these vineyards has married beautifully, proving again that sometimes ‘the whole is greater than the sum of its parts’.

Viticulture

Cabernet Sauvignon (90%) Petit Verdot (5%) Malbec (5%)
2020
Margaret River
Average winter rainfall followed by a warm/dry spring set up an early start to the growing season. Fruit set was variable, resulting in lower yields across most varieties. The warm summer daytime temperatures combined with low yields saw harvest begin very early, at the end of January (one of our earliest ever) and all whites were harvested before the end of February. An incredible display of Marri blossom meant bird pressure was practically non-existent in the first half of vintage, and a short rain event after the white harvest offered some respite setting up the reds perfectly. Warm conditions continued throughout March, with all of the reds being harvested by the first week of April, our earliest ever harvest completion. In summary, 2020 will be remembered as an excellent vintage in Margaret River. Cabernet, and a beautiful little portion of Petit Verdot, from the Timber Creek Vineyard in Wilyabrup make up 50% of the blend along with 45% of fruit from the dry grown Victory Point vineyard, which is situated in the subregion of Treeton. The remaining 5% (Malbec) is from our own Stevens Road vineyard in the Wallcliffe subregion

Tasting Notes

Deep red with purple hues
The perfume is intense and complex, exhibiting ripe mulberries, blackcurrant pastilles and black plums, with hints of pot pourri and cedar adding spice in the background
The generous palate is full bodied and crammed full of dark forest fruits, cassis, and chocolate characters. Powerful yet refined in structure the fleshy fruits, are framed by fine French oak and complimented by dense, velvety tannins. Quintessential Margaret River, with a lingering Cabernet finish
Powerful, vibrant, and robust in its youth, this is a benchmark Cabernet from Xanadu which will certainly benefit from further bottle maturation and will cellar comfortably for 10+ years

Fruit was crushed/destemmed before predominantly small batch fermentation in a combination of static and open fermenters Fermentation takes 7-8 days @ 24 – 26o C, during which the cap is managed using a combination of aerative pumping over as well as regular plunging by hand. After fermentation the Timber Creek Cabernet component (45%) experienced a period of extended maceration on skins before a very gentle pressing. The wine was matured for 14 months in French oak (40% new barriques) before the blend was assembled

There have been some wonderful 2020 cabernets from Margaret River but none better than this. What a glorious statement of the region and a great vintage. Highly perfumed aromas of mulberry, dark chocolate and blackcurrant with a little plum and dried herb edging in. The palate is full-bodied with immense power. Black fruit, dark plum and some wild berry action with oak that has been almost lyrically laid. Bright and vital with a lithe expressiveness that is pure joy.

What’s the point of writing anything about this wine? Really. But you’ve come this far so I’ll add the reason: It’s complete, exceptional and beguiling. The best Margaret River cabernet exemplifies those alluring characters. OK, you want to know more. It’s heady with mulberries, cassis and damson plum, wakame and squid ink. Medium bodied, plush and velvety across the palate thanks to sublime tannins with an outrageously long finish. This is irresistible.

Perfumed, displaying lovely aromas of crunchy red fruits, mulberries, gentle mocha and cedar, with a whiff of sea spray and liquorice. Pulpy fleshy texture on the palate, with loads of ripe tannins. Long mineral finish.

Deep, bright and youthful red-purple colour; the bouquet is essence of cabernet—cassis, violet and mulberry leap from the glass, a hint of nori, while oak treatment is subtle and has been well suited to the style of fruit. Full body, ample soft/fine tannins and superior length. An impressive mouthful of fair dinkum cabernet.

Classic Margaret River Cab aromas of black cherry, currants, tobacco leaf, vanilla and toasty, mocha-like oak leads to a full-figured palate that's wrapped in muscular tannins but with a lovely freshness and fruit density. Still young, primary and somewhat austere, this will evolve over the next several decades.

Blackcurrant, blackberry and iodine with oyster shell and lead pencil aromas. Medium to full body, with creamy and fine tannins and a long, consistent finish. So beautiful now. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Aromas of dried sage, blue fruit allusions, mint, boysenberries and the signature black currant. The tannins, a thickly textured scape across the mouth, rolled with lavender, black olive, peony and lilac. The underlying freshness, iodine and maritime. An impressive, full-weighted wine that needs time. Best after 2025. Screw cap.

Trophy
The multi-vineyard Xanadu Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is composed of Houghton Clone sourced from vineyards in the coastal region of Wilyabrup, northern Margaret River and the sub-region of Wallcliffe. Small-batch fermentation and 12 to 14 months maturation in new (40-55%) and seasoned French oak barriques results in a wine with intense blackcurrant and herb garden aromas, superb richness and concentration, and vigorous, fine, chalky tannins. Roughly 5% malbec and 5% petit verdot.
