After a long, and relatively cold and wet winter budburst was later than usual, and about a week or two later than last season. There was still some wet, windy spring weather which affected fruit set. Despite the late start to the season, the fantastic WA summer allowed the growing season to catch up with warm, fine weather and a few of very hot periods. Marri trees had a bumper year for blossom, which always bodes well, distracting birds from away from the fruit (at least for the first half of the season while the blossom lasted). There was no significant weather pressure experienced at all early in the vintage, in fact the warm weather meant that the whites were harvested at a frenetic pace in order to preserve natural acidity. Yields were relatively low however the fruit quality was excellent with great flavour intensity. In summary 2022 will be remembered as an outstanding vintage in Margaret River. The Vinework Semillon bears testimony to the pedigree of our Lagan Estate vineyard which was planted in 1977. This limited Cellar Door release is a single vineyard wine, and only produced in exceptional years. |
Tasting Notes
Pale straw with slight green tinge. |
|
The vibrant bouquet displays zesty citrus, grapefruit and lemon-thyme with lime blossom and hay characters in the background. |
|
Medium bodied, the palate offers a wonderful purity of fruit and is brimming with varietal expression. Bright citrus, quince and dried herbs combine with hints of lemon sorbet and spice producing a focussed wine, fine boned and talcy in structure, finishing crisp, clean, and dry. |

The fruit was crushed, destemmed and chilled before a very gentle pressing, with only free-run juice used. The settled, clean juice was then fermented at 15oC in tank using an aromatic yeast strain to retain fresh varietal characteristics. After fermentation, the wine was periodically lees stirred in tank for a few months to add texture, and bottled soon after, capturing the liveliness of its youth. |

Well hello, semillon. This charms with its lemon rind and juice with a smattering of Mediterranean herbs. It's spine-tingling fresh yet has texture and succulence alongside lemon sherbet acidity. A terrific drink that will reward even more with bottle age.
